Number Sense, Quantity, and Counting -- Number Sense and Quantity

Goal 1: Children count in sequence, recognize numerals, connect numerals with quantities, and compare quantities.

By the end of each age group or grade level, most children will have met prior age group or grade level standards in this domain.

Infants Through Older Toddlers

Infants

(0-12 Months)

  1. Use words, signs or gestures to request “more”
  2. Attend to songs, finger plays, and books that include numbers and numerals

Young Toddlers

(9-18 Months)

  1. Use a few number words without understanding quantity
  2. Imitate rote counting
  3. Participate in simple songs and activities that include numbers (e.g. Five Little Monkeys)
  4. Demonstrate an awareness of early concepts related to amount (e.g., more, one or two)

Older Toddlers

(18-36 Months)

  1. Recite numbers to 5 in sequence with few errors
  2. Count up to 5 objects using one number for each object with assistance and support
  3. Recognize some numerals in the environment
  4. Use the word more to identify the larger of two groups, and less for smaller groups.
Younger Preschoolers Through Kindergartners

Younger Preschoolers

(36-48 months)

  1. Recite numbers to 10 in correct sequence
  2. Count up to 5 objects using one number for each object independently
  3. Quickly identify number of 1-3 objects without counting
  4. Read numerals up to 5 and connect them to the quantities they represent

Older Preschoolers

(48-60 months)

  1. Recite numbers to 20 in sequence with only occasional errors
  2. Say the next number that comes before or after in a sequence of 1-10
  3. Count a group of up to 10 objects and understand that the last number represents the number of objects in the group
  4. Quickly identify number of 1-5 objects without counting
  5. Read numerals up to 10 and connect them to the quantities they represent
  6. Compare groups of up to 10 objects and identify which group has more or less, or if they are the same (equal)

Kindergartners
